Cavities (Tooth Decay)

How to Avoid Cavities

Tooth decay occurs when sugary or starchy food and drink are frequently left on the tooth. Bacteria in our mouth feed on these carbohydrates and produce acid, which breaks down tooth enamel. Decay can happen at any age, from a baby’s first tooth, throughout a lifetime. Ways to reduce and eliminate tooth decay are to limit snacking and sugary drinks, to brush and floss at least twice a day, use fluoride varnishes, toothpastes and/or supplements, and to schedule your dental checkup regularly.
