Oral Health & Medications

It is common for many patients to be on one or more medications. Prescription and over the counter medications can come with many side effects. Some medications are sweetened with sugar to make them taste better. This can increase the risk of tooth decay. Be sure to ask your pharmacist about non-sweetened alternatives.

Hundreds of medications are known to cause dry mouth, or xerostomia. This has a great effect on our health. Dryness can cause gums, cheeks, lips, and tongue to be sore. It can cause a change in taste. Because saliva flow is decreased, bacteria is not naturally washed away and therefore stick to the teeth and gums and can contribute to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and cavities. Products, such as mouth rinses, toothpastes, and dental gels are available to help relieve dry mouth.
